Preserving historic properties is one of the most impactful efforts within the Society’s mission of protecting the past so as to enrich our area’s future.
Historic Preservation

Historic preservation, to include the rehab and adaptive reuse of such structures is an economically viable model that contributes to the character and aesthetics of a community. With this in mind, the Crawford County Historical Society has acquired several historic properties with plans to repurposed them as amenities that will directly benefit the area’s economy.
Through the contributions and efforts of volunteers, donors, individual and corporate sponsors, state and federal lawmakers, departments, and agencies, community and municipal leaders, strategic partnerships, our board members, and the community at large, the Crawford County Historical Society has been able to draw from a wealth of resources in making our current preservation projects a reality.
Promoting Historic Conservation
Conserving historic structures, properties, and districts is an endeavor that benefits Crawford County in many ways. To promote historic conservation in the area, the Society recognizes the preservation efforts of individuals and businesses through its Historic Preservation Award with winners being named at the Society’s annual meeting held each June. The Society also seeks to offer programming to help individuals with DIY historic home improvement projects.
Historic conservation is an initiative that can yield many positive outcomes for our community. Such efforts are not limited to historic-based organizations, either. For those municipalities that want to leverage historic conservation as a strategy for economic development, the Crawford County Historical Society can act as a trusted advisor on the use of incentives such as historic tax credits and programs like the PHMC’s Certified Local Government.
